Besides WHO staging of HIV, T-staging is also used in clinical practice. I am interested to known criteria used for T-staging system and how it is correlated with WHO clinical staging system.
In my opinion, WHO staging is more for epidemiology surveillance such as transmission prevention programs, whereas T-staging or clinical staging is more widely used for the treatment of HIV infection individually
WHO staging is merely clinical and is useful in resource-constrained settings without readily access to CD4 cell count measurements. Conversely, we use CDC staging, which is more complete, in both clinical practice and research. It assesses the severity of HIV disease by CD4 cell count and by the presence of specific HIV-related conditions.
Not an exact rule but overall you will note that CDC category A correlates with WHO stage 1, CDC category B correlates with WHO stage 2 and 3, and CDC category C correlates with WHO stage 4.
