I have synthesized a membrane and used for separation CO2/CH4, now I'm going to investigate of productive impact on Environment with Life cycle assessment attitude via SimaPro software, How should functional unite to be considered ?
There are several possible options, depending on the use and function of your membrane. Amongst other things, you might want to consider surface units (e.g. mm^2), longevity of the membrane, amount of CO2 or CH4 separated/treated, etc.
The first step in your reflexion should be to clearly define the studied function, then to select a functional unit that makes sense - a literature review on similar membranes might be a good place to start.

I am totally agree with the reply of Charles. The functional unit has to clearly represent the main function of the system under evaluation, so this should be the starting point of your study. Best regards - Mario
