In my opinion it is:

Biomass utilization in coke making process (biocoke production) and in blast furnace is very important.

Also interesting post-oven coke processing by special chemical reagents to change the reactivity of coke.

And of course, the composition of the coal charge, ways to preparation and conditions of coking.

I think development of high reactivity coke for blast furnace is one of the latest coke oven activity where researchers are concentrating

As per recent emerging technology,CASP(carbon alloy synthesis process) could be considered latest development in coke making process producing Carbonyx(trade mark),a substitute for coke in the steel industry.The base material is here a coal,which is mixed with other carbonaceous sub-substances and subjected to several critical reactions in a controlled environment.The Carbonyx is a semi crstalline structure.It operates at lower temp.compared to conventional coke making process

There are many different process modifications / innovations, companies are doing according to their input material / process and need. Some of them are

1. Use of chemicals to improve coke reactivity / combustion efficiency.

2. Adjusting physical properties to suit diff types / levels of aux fuel injections. 

 In the present scenario, there are so many technologies come in the field of coke making such as:-

1-  Blending of non-coking coal more than 15%.

2-  Use of additives like bentonite, tar , molasses etc. to improve coke quality.

3-  Use of chemicals to improve carbonisation /coke making tecknology related to process .

4- Quenching technology with zero emission/pollutant free environment in wet quenching

5- .Carbon alloy synthesis process ie CASP is the latest technology for steel makers.
