ETABS is a well-known software program for structural engineering. It claims to check the design with valid standards. However, as it is not open-source it's not very clear how it processes the input data. How reliable is it? Could one refer to its results in a scientific paper?

In my thesis i'm working on push over analysis with opensses and it has really exact results that etabs or sap2000. I have checked a structure and pushed it with opensees and sap2000. Both periods were same as each other but the difference was in decimals. But totally it depends or your assay or thesis subject. in my thesis it was hard for me to link etabs with matlab but it was easy to link between opensees and matlab. If you wanna just work with a software without any link between another softwares i prefer etabs is better. Writing codes are a little hard for me.

Same as any other FE code. You should benchmark the code results against problems with known answers. And use all results with appropriate caution.

I am working on ETABS for my thesis and I can say it's quite reliable since under the section of pushover analysis I've run models of few journals that too from Springer natures and the results were similar too the paper with and error of 0.1%. I even did the same for SAP2000 and StaadPro and results for that structure was coming out to be nearly same only. And yes you can refer its results in scientific paper.
I agree with the advantage of ETABS over more familiar software in student circles like STAAD.PROv8i. Some people[ my UG project students] feel ETABS more easy and handy than STAAD.Prov8i

It depends on the user. In my opinion, ETABS is best structural software (structural analysis for building analysis and design) specially used for analysis of concrete shear walls and concrete moment frame, just next to STAAD Pro and SAP 2000. Software tutorial is highly intuitive and user friendly. Using software one can produce a more efficient and reliable mesh with high accuracy.

Agreed. Number of student project working on ETABS software are more than the number of students with STAAD.Prov8i. For Bridge designs I feel SAP2000 and CSI Bridge are more reliable.
