Not discouraging publication in high IF journals, but trying to look on the other side of the coin. Do you think open access journal reaches more people?
Publications in high impact factor journal means high quality research. Quality research leads to innovations/discoveries/inventions which directly or indirectly benefits the society by way of developing new technology/application or improving existing technology/application.

I agree with Prof. Subhash. The high impact journals usually publish only high quality researches. These research findings reach wider academic community also. As a result , these articles promote further researches based on them. Therefore, frequent and desirable innovations will take place. This scenario is very much useful in developing knowledge and hence the infrastructure and facilities of people all over the world.
Interesting what Abhijit said , then i think we can resume that if we think a journal is good, all publications on it are good, then...we should read it because should be a good paper.
If we think a journal is not good, then all papers that are in that journal are not good, then we do not need to spend time reading it....
I think this is like a prejudice ....an idea that as the strenght of a believe...too dangerous!
Publication in high impact factor journal is not necessary. But some innovative works should be published in esteemed journal which is not open access. I'm fully agree with the answer given by Dr. Krishnan Umachandran.
They say, it's useless to oppose great force or fight a more powerful opponent. You can't chop wood with a penknife. Bureaucracy rules supreme. An ordinary person thinks about surviving, a rich one thinks about profit. These two social poles are not interested in science at all. The intellectual part of society lives learning, trying to be up to date.Their opinions and interests are ignored if they don't provide an immediate benefit.
Its very true, Dr. Mitra that impact factor reaches to very few persons because most of the time they re paid. On the other hand, open access journals reaches a wider section of the society and increases the citation index.
Many open access jounals have very high impact factors.
But I agree with Roland and Subhash, publications don' have a direct impact on people, but high quality research could have, especially in medecine, and I hope will improve our life with new and important discoveries.
In my opinion, the publications in journals with high index impact are important not only of the academic point, but also to try to call attention of society. Well, certainly, this publications contributing to ourself index. But, remember, the science is done in collaboration, change of knowledge among the scientists.
Well, we could prepare informatives to share our findings with the general public. But, not all research is necessary to share with the common mass, 'cause many of them consists in basic research.
The society particularly the common mass does not understand level of journal and level of research. They are ultimate users and interested in applications of research and technology. High quality research helped to society indirectly.
In my opinion publication in open access journal has high impact on the common man than publication in subscription based journals. It doesn't mean that the common public is reading these articles.
For example there are thousands of researchers working in institutions (mostly in developing countries) which does not have access to these journals. Therefore to get a paper published in an high impact factor journal or any subscription based journal the researcher has to send several mails to the author, friends and sometimes frustration will be the outcome. Publication in open access journal will help these researchers definitely and through them there will be an advancement of knowledge and indirectly the common man is getting benefited.
There are several journals which support open access. But the question is who will pay me if I want to publish my paper open access??
It is a true that the publication in high impact factor journal has a good quality. but, some times, the high score of impact factor depend on the journal field. we see in some field we find many journal the IF more than 8 or 10. in other field , we rarely found a IF journal more that 2.( for example, in cryptography).
Sometimes there are very good papers that are not accepted for those publications with high impact factor, because they innovate in the regular publications of this journal. Thus, some are rejected for being innovative, which means that each of these journals has the disadvantage of remaining very similar articles as when they should support innovation, creativity, be different.
Act as a group in which to be accepted, it must comply with the rules ..... this is the negative aspect.
The good thing is that any articles of these journals are seen as interesting, even if not as good as accepted in journals with less prestige.
In the background, people and "things" (= articles) work similarly: it is important to belong to a group to be accepted (best journals, more if it's accepted as a good scientist). those which are different from leaders but which create niches (accepted in newspapers less rankings), will be read by fewer people and were considered good for a smaller number of people. But the niches sometimes turn into LIDERS, ie, journals to gain high rankings means so accumulating prestige over the years: they are like children who will grow up to be adult.
That's how we form our beliefs about what are good journals, or whatever aspects of life such as religion, and all information that contradict we tend to ignore it.
The rules exist, the routines, the usual facilitates our lives, for helping us to accept without thinking. Are the routines that create and that allow us to say, the journal has a high ranking so any paper included in it has quality. It is an accepted prejudice, is a belief, and whatever information that denies it is for us automatically rejected.
It does not add up in a way as robots? As programmed?
