i am about to make a survey for a large number of bacterial clinical isolates for a specific type of antibiotic resistance ................... these isolates are collected from many health institutions ........ to name my study as " A MULTICENTER STUDY " ; Do i need to have a minimum number of isolates ? in other words ; is there a threshold for " multicenter studies " ?
The antibiotic mechanism u want to study in certain clinical isolates the site of clinical isolate collection is very important. If u have random isolates from various sites so may be the mechanism u want to study will not work rather will generate confusions especially in nosocomial case. In our experience for each bacterium a total of 100 isolates (20 per center out of 5 centers) are enough to study one type of antibiotic mechanism for a moderate scale research. Your isolates belong to one type of bacterium or many , Gram positives or Gram negative it all counts..U want to check antibiotic mechanism of one drug or multi drugs it all matters. Only then anyone can suggest u more better. Precise specifications will lead your research more valuable rather than a simple random data collection research...
i had already collected a number of isolates and gained information like source of isolate , date of isolation and the department within which the patient was located ..... but the antibiotic regimen was not available because my contact was only with the lab personnel not the clinical staff
