We want to treat mice with STZ (type I diabetes model) and although most of the studies time frames are 10 and 20 weeks long, we wonder how longer the mice can survive. Any thoughts?
My only experience with untreated diabetic mice involved NZO/H1LtJ, so the model was different (fairly early onset Type II diabetes). Males had high mortality at 16-20 weeks, usually from severe genitourinary tract infections. Female mortality increased around 13-14 months. Some males lived to 9-10 months of age, and some females lived to nearly 2 years.
