My lab will obtain a batch of saliva specimens recently, and I would like to extract RNA for gene expression. These specimens are stored directly under -80C without any RNA stabilization. I have gone through the protocol of two saliva RNA extraction kits (Qiagen RNeasy Protect Saliva Mini and Oragene RNA), both of them stated saliva should be preserved with the RNA stabilization reagent right after the collection. So I am wondering if my specimens good enough for RNA extraction? Since some people mentioned saliva contains abundant RNase, and RNA degradation is rapid after thawing. Thank you.
