The main objective of publishing a journal article is to share the 'research findings' among the scientific community. Researchers read journals to keep themselves updated. Researchers often search papers of their interest. The search engines and indexing services are found to be useful in this aspect - they need keywords to do their job.

Selection of keywords:

• Keywords should ideally be phrases of 2-4 words (single word keywords are acceptable, but they may lead to many false matches)
• Keywords should contain words and phrases that suggest what the topic is about
• If the paper focuses on a particular region (geographic, climatic, etc.), the keyword like semi-arid tropics, the polar region, coniferous forests etc. may be used
• The experimental material and techniques, may be used as keywords (HPLC, alkaloids, x-ray crystallography, animal dung)
• The potential applications can serve as keywords (organic farming, long-term preservation, energy efficiency)

It is of crucial importance for your paper to be cited. As a researcher I always use key words as I start the literature review. If the key words I look for arw not there, I just skip the article, altvough it mught be just what I look for.
