I have a composite ceramic-polymer coating (zirconia+PEI) on NiTi alloy, fabricated by electrodeposition in ambient temperature. Therefore, the zirconia obtained is in amorphous stage and a method such as XRD cannot be applied for characterization of the polymer and zirconia. Because my substrate is a metal, it can harm the probe of ATR-FTIR, if I use this method for characterization of the coating, and the coating itself is adherent and cannot be easily scraped from the substrate to take FTIR from its powder.

you could use the Ft-Ir instrumentation directly on the deposited coating layer, using particular accessories such as the one for total reflection or that one for the ATR, studied for the characterization of layers/films (in particular organic) on plane substrates. If your compound is at least partially conductive, you could use the XPS (X-Ray Photolelectron Spectroscopy) technique to characterize the first surface layers. By making the sample conductive you could try to analyze the Zr distribution with the SEM technique .... Best regards and... good luck !!! Pierluigi Traverso

a) AFM[1-3] (atomic force microscopy),
b) depth resolved Raman micro-spectroscopic scanning[3], and
c) synchrotron X-ray diffraction[3].

You have not much said on the thickness of electrochemically deposited ceramic-polymer coating on NiTi. You must find out the coating thickness first and make sure it is atleast around 250 nm or more. More is better. Once you find the thickness of the deposited coating, it would be easier to file it to make powder and test it using XRD. You would find ZrO2 as crystalline while polymer phase would be amorphous. There are other methods but the are cumbersome.

Mr. Kothari, I haven't measured the coating's exact thickness, but it is in micrometer scale, but less than 10 micron. And about Zirconia, I must say that because it is fabricated by electrolytic deposition in room temperature, then it would be mostly amorphous.
