With due respect, I want to inquire about that how I can characterize some noble metal bonded in hydroxide form to some support. We can usually see with the XPS as there would be some binding energy difference but it's hard to differentiate between the chloride form of noble metal and hydroxide. We can see some difference at oxygen O1S in the form of metal-O bond (maybe) but the error range there is also very high. So is there any other possible characterization? Thanks!!!
Vibrational spectroscopy such as reflection FTIR, Raman or in the premium case HREELS could be an option. Please be aware that if there are no literature references on your system, you may require the help of a theoretician for modelling.
However, for noble metal chloride+hydroxide I would say the chances to find something should be good (haven't checked).
Thanks for the Valuable comment. I had Raman in mind before but I am curious if it could work on a very low loading amount of metal probably less than 1%.
Arsalan Haider Generally, XPS analysis is only limited to composition of top-most surface of material and not in the bulk. I would recommend to try FT-IR analysis and TOF-SIMS. In TOF-SIMS you might be able to see the neighboring chemical environment of the metal in the form of cluster. Good luck.
