I collected diarrhoeal calf feces and I detected the genes, eae, stx1 and 2, elt,est. A I found 2 eae positive strains which are negative for stx's and elt and est. Now can I say my 2 eae positive strains are Enteropathogenic E. coli not Enterhemorrhagic E. coli? If anybody has some answers, please give me.
EHEC will be Stx positive and possess the LEE-encoded T3SS that includes eae. That's what really defines them for pathogenicity. Of course there are non EHEC that carry Stx genes as well. Of course you need to ensure the T3SS is expressed for function. However given the flexibility within E. coli (the O104 outbreak in Germany is a good example) it is perhaps not ideal to strictly pigeonhole pathotypes.
Check for presence of plasmids in your isolates.
If so, go for a plasmid profiling for differentiating EPEC and EHEC at molecular level
