I have a shell like meshed model loaded in ansys (not modelled in ansys. elements defined and loaded as .txt file).
How can I select the outer nodes of the inner surface?
I thought of getting help from Matlab but I'm not much familiar with it...

I suppose that you need to apply boundary condition to the selected nodes...
Well Matlab is not good enough for this because you need to write down the subroutine how you exactly have created these nodes - it means that if you know how you have created the model then you are writing a macro to combine nodes into a component.
Working only with ANSYS, of course, there is the "selecting by picking " option in which you are selecting options like "box", "polygon" or "circle" instead of "single" within the "select nodes" picking menu. This takes time, but it works!
Meanwhile, there is a professional tool to work with your problem /import-export in various CAD formats as well as in any FE looking formats (elements+nodes) and futher transformation into ANY FE format (ANSYS, ABAQUS, LS-DYNA etc) This tool also allows to correct your CAD for meshing and apply any boundary condition. This is "Hypermesh" from http://www.altairhyperworks.com
For selecting all nodes attached to a surface
In ANSYS APDL utility menu
Goto Select > Entities> Area (First drop down tab)> OK> (Select the surface containing nodes)
Again Goto Select > Entities> Nodes (First drop down tab)> Attached to (Second drop down tab)> Areas,all> From full>OK

yes, I'm familiar with HM and have done some FE with Optistruct...
I use Avizo to create a 3D model of some bony parts. using Avizo I can have all my model (separate bone pieces) all together in Ansys using .unv format and then converting it to a txt file loadable in ansys...
I think if I use HM, I must do lotsof work to define contact surfaces...

if your problem is dominantly "contact problem" then the most efficient way is to run LS-DYNA - the most powerfull search algorithm allows to run problem with "self-contact" without additional specification of contact surfaces. Many researchers (including my collegues) have been turning their computations from ANSYS and ABAQUS into LS-DYNA exactly due to this mentioned problem (a lot of contact surfaces)

i have meshed my 3-d model(pressure vessel) in hypermesh. After importing .cdb file into ansys apdl i am unable to select areas to apply pressure on the inside surface of the vessel. Can anyone suggest how to select the elements only on the inside of the surface all together in ansys apdl
