I actually doubt that these impressions are reliable in a natural-scientific context, as judgements are always subjective rather than objective.

I am not really sure about the working principles in biology, though. I would guess, it depends on what you observe. For example, if you study the bird you mentioned, you can probably describe the living conditions in a few minutes to some extend (e.g. lives in a nest high up a tree, feeds on insects, etc...). But this is already more objective, as you can observe also other birds of the same kind, and if they also show this behavior your result is reproducable.

The same holds for humans, you can quickly determine the color of the hair, the approximate height, etc...

However, these are not really judgments, I would say, judgements are more regarding the character, habits, etc... and here I would also guess that you won't say after a few minutes of bird watching that this particular specimen is very friendly, warm hearted, egoistic, or something in that manner.

I use my Sixth Sense, if rational judgment is impossible. I also like that proverbial question, “Do you see the glass as half empty or half full?”

People just judge because that’s what they do, and it comes from feeling, from feeling weak. And so, if you’re leading your life to really make sure that no one’s judging you, then you’re really gonna be spending way too much of your time and energy concerned with something you have no control over, because people are gonna judge you regardless. I'm in agreement with what has been said about the unreliability of making judgements of people with limited contact.  I'm taking this as a general question for maybe a study.  One of the frameworks I've always liked, although it is not the only one available, is the Johari window.  It was actually created by two fellows named Joe and Harry.  They divided what people reveal about themselves and what others see in other people into 4 quadrants.  The first quadrant is what people easily reveal about themselves, i.e. what state they live in, what school they went too, their job.  Mostly superficial stuff.  Quadrant 2, individuals have behaviors that others see but they don't recognize themselves.  Presenters will use certain body language signs or words, like you know without realizing they are doing that.  There's a 3rd quadrant where people don't share more sensitive information.  You maybe able to find out quickly where someone went to college.  Few people are going to tell you how money they have in their portfolio.  The 4th quadrant is unknown to self and others.

So when you meet someone, you can gather first quadrant and behavioral cues in a short period of time.  Any in depth information about that person is going to take time and trust.  Making a judgment about a person on mostly superficial information is rarely accurate.

Studying behaviors of humans and that of other wild creatures is a little different as humans are thinkers who react to stimuli on a purpose driven fashion. If we do not know some one either personally for quite long time or through his/her works, it is  flawed to judge or make behavioral decisions on some one.

Behavior is a phenomena some one displays along the time line of his/her existence and which will continue in a certain way and knowing that requires long time encounters or if our decision is on the works of some one, then we just look at what he/she has accomplished through personal information available - this one is like knowing how electrons exist - not by seeing them but by their actions, by the effects they create.  

We can not tell a behavior of any arbitrary function and in fact wrong by looking only its part on an interval, it may be something else out side of that interval, unless the function is special kind, like periodic so that knowing what it is on the interval of one period is quite enough to know the whole of the function.

Judging people and for that matter any situation are not free from biases. In fact power, monopoly and such traits provide metrics to judge and proceed. But yes, poor judgement affects society, community and individuals.

i feel no one is bad - the percentage of selfishness varies from person to person - have an open mind - the first impression is not always the correct one-- when i see a person i like him/ her - may be hormones - BUT NO ONE IS BAD- regarding wild life my knowledge is limited 

If no one is 'bad', why has the word 'bad' been invented? Bad is an interpretation of diversity in biological expression? E.g. A lion/crocodile kills but is not bad? An extraterrestrial organism briefly visiting planet Earth seeing a lion sleeping (for most of the time) would conclude what?

One needs only to meet professional actors who have been prompted and informed in a situation intended to deceive. This comes up in training exercises. The actors always win.

We are always at a disadvantage when deception is intended.

If I may rephrase to "How do you arrive at a conclusion on people you do not truly know?" - my answer is it is possible to form some impressions after short term encounters as "first impressions last" (may be due to without subsequent conditioning / influencing, first impression gives us the more accurate picture about the other party), analogously to the experience whereby first time round answer selected / provided for an exam question most of the times are correct when we are not sure.

It is the hardest because we can not know what the true intents of humans unless they express it or act on it.  We as creatures of reason have to make our decisions, including  judging others, not  condemning them but to tell what they do,  based on what we truly observed them doing and verify (not on what we feel or imagined). It is easiest when we see people do something that should not be doable as a rational and reasonable being that transcends locality and similarity. Einstein said, it is the most splendid feeling when you find the similarity of things tat we thought were dissimilar at all. if there is a promotional commercial that claims a particular environment/community is welcoming and perfect habitat to all living creatures, but you find that environment is extremely preferential and not as it claims to be, as there is/are few living creatures who happened to be there and found ill treated and looked to death. Yes, the transparent people do things in a visible way and their actions are observed and therefore not difficult to understand what they do. What we can not clearly see and clearly say is the actions of those people who look nice from the outside but different from the inside and from their actions.  A person received your case or you in person  in his office and treated you as a  nice and most valuable person he/she has never met but  ordered to his secretary saying this is the person I do not want to see him/her and sent a letter that says we regret to let you know you are not selected and pick his/her own likes (from my perspective). To be frank, based on actions of some people,  there will be humans who will be denied access to a place to work and make a living on their expertise and knowledge, on the face of the earth, even if their knowledge and skills are badly  needed by the community in particular and the society they live in. People have their own preferences and are puzzles within themselves. There can be a pattern on agreement but judging is complex phenomenon.

Our face is a mirror .It is very difficult to draw of line of demarcation of the person with whom we are not acquainted with or we do not know them in a perfect manner . For this person if we do not know them , it will better that we should make a cursory  to introduce ourselves & thereafter we should try to know his working environment & the nature of his standing in this regards.

After knowing the background of each other, we may at  the outset from his talked & personal introduction the way & manner of his presentation & also with an inclination it is very likely that we may certainly give justice as a person if not fully but at the substantial percentage whereby we may not go wrong in our presumption for him .

One is to judge the people we meet, another is to judge animals we meet. Especially for species we do not know much about.

With regard to animals, judgment is given after sufficient observation, study and contact with them.

With regard to the assessment of humans or species of animals that we personally know, we rely on millions of years of genetic information encoded within us, our senses, our own life experiences, and factors we often do not even suspect - pheromones , instincts for self-preservation, breeding, survival, and others. For example, memories of individuals with similar physiology, behavior, attitude, vision, and their attitude to us or influence in our lives. This in most cases we do unconsciously.

So the combination of all this would give us a pretty good initial picture for the one who stands before us even for a short time. This assessment is always subjective, and it is not necessarily true, but it is still a good start.

But some people claim and spend more time and energy on doing the opposite. And we can witness the dire consequences.
