Research is a systematic approach to studying a phenomenon, either to understand that phenomenon better, or to make improvements in the phenomenon once it is understood.  Innovation is research to make improvements to the phenomenon.  However, it is important to recognize innovation can be sought after by hit-and-miss methods (trial and error) and in a minority of cases, an innovation may result from the use of such hit and miss methods.

Scientific research is the means by which to solve a specific problem or to discover new facts through accurate information. Scientific research depends on the scientific method. The scientific method depends on organized methods of observation, recording of information, description of events and formation of hypotheses. While innovation is defined as the ability of an individual to create new ideas, methods or concepts, and to implement them in a new and unfamiliar manner.

I see a difference between the two.

1.The source of innovation is creativity which needs creative or non-linear thinking. Creativity is usually defined as an uncommon combination of already known parameters of the problem. Innovation is when we create a produit based on the creativity.

2. On the other hand; research is a more general term including theoritical and applied research. Theoritical research is based on creative thinking and applied research is based on critical thinking.

Research involves skills and critical thinking. Innovation involves critical thinking and unique intelligence.

Research is the hard work and Innovation is the success. The former is the journey to an unknown destination and the later is reaching a particular destination, where every researcher wish to be.

Really an innovation work must be a patent.

There can be a myriad of views, but this is a topic I have actually discussed numerous times over the years. (That does not make me a de facto authority, but it is a fun discussion!)

Research is a systematic (hopefully) investigation of a "problem" that works to extend knowledge. It typically follows an existing line of thought (e.g., hypothesis driven studies) and/or fills in "details", but it can also lead to insights that deviate from or change the accepted line of thought (for instance, by identifying a paradox or some new unknown or question.)

Innovation is a jump from or an addition to a line of thinking that is not simply a progression of details from a systematic research effort. I view it as being linked to solving a problem or creating "something" with an additional "function", and which would not have arisen from research done to fill in the details. (The quotation marks are added so the terms are taken with some generality, rather than absolutely literally in the semantic sense.)

Of course, innovation may be facilitated by research, and research is almost always needed to optimize an innovation.

Doing basic researches is a practical way used as a first preparation step aiming to create an innovative researcher with time. Thus, one depends on another and visa versa.

According to me, research is an effort and inovation is the result achieved the respected researchers.

Research is methodical and thorough. It may result in significant findings and papers being presented and published but the result may not be earth shattering. Innovation on the other hand need not evolve out of detailed research. It can be totally serendipitous. For example, Fleming happened to notice mold growing in dishes in his sink which he had not washed for some days and this led to the invention of penicillin, a life-saving drug. Fleming did not intentionally discover penicillin although he did a lot of research afterwards to make that concept into a marketable product. Thus research may or may not lead to innovation. Innovation may be the result of upfront research to begin with but not necessarily so. One of my three patents totally arose out of accident.

Research leads to innovations but not vise-versa. I think that the point is how to decide about an innovation, is it an innovation or not. Another aspect is the difference between innovation and application ! Mainly experts can decide upon that.

In some countries there is no difference between research and innovative research. And may be depend on the name of researchers. In my opinion there is a difference between a research intended for promotion and research based on original idea. But who can judge that?

Innovation is something that brings sudden change in market in terms of new product development and in research something that totally changes the replaces technology, method or technique that exists previously. On the other hand resarch is a gradual and systematic process to develop new theories and facts, to solve problems on the basis of existing knowledge and observations. Research does not always lead to innovation but combination of various research, facts and solutions can lead to innovation.

Why should we distinguish innovation and research? I mean, innovation is something only can be defined by history. Only when people sketch back to history, we can judge what is the real innovation. As for research, it is the road to innovation.

I think the terms get confused because of the overuse of the word "innovation." Traditionally, it meant a new or creative way of thinking or doing something. The word is derived from the Latin word 'nova' meaning new or strange. The word today is usually used to mean new commercialisable product or service, or at least something directly useful whether commercial or not.

Research is a process. One outcome of research may be innovation, but it need not be. The goal of research is not to create a new idea--although we all like to be able to make that claim. The goal is understanding in the first instance. That process may well lead to a new understanding of existing ideas or phenomenon, but that is a secondary outcome of the process.

Real innovation cannot occur in the absence of research. Reviewing all of the best ideas in a field ensures that 'new' ideas are indeed new, and have the best chance of being better than the existing ones.

Scientific research can lead to the creation of innovative technologies, product, process and other innovations. On the other hand, innovations can improve research work by adding to the scientific activity aspects of innovation.
