The amount of enzyme needed to achieve a desired degree of conversion for lignocellulosic biomass is defined empirically. This is because the hydrolytic efficiency of the enzyme or enzyme mixture used varies according to its origin (microorganism/supplier), the nature of the lignocellulosic biomass and the way in which the saccharification process is conducted and the conditions under which it is carried out. The amount of FPU per gram of biomass or per gram of cellulose chosen on the basis of observations reported in the literature is just a starting point.

Now, if you want to know the volume of enzyme extract you need to use to start your SSF process, just do a rule of three using the activity per volume (100 FPU/mL) and the amount of activity you want in your system (30 FPU). The result of this calculation is 0.3mL of enzyme extract.
