My data has been coded 1=male and 2=female, I got a response that my variables were invalid when I imported into WHO Anthroplus from my excel worksheet. My aim is to calculate the BMI-Z=Scores of adolescents between ages 12 and 18.
The problem may be the format of the values in your dataset. Many programs are able to upload data from a ".csv" file. In SPSS you can write syntax lines to export your data into a .csv file. Such a file can be opened or imported into other software programs. I don't know WHO Anthroplus, but I guess it should also work with that. There is a huge SPSS manual document, look for the command 'SAVE FILE AS' or similar commands. Don't print all the whole manual, which for me resulted in a queue of annoyed colleagues standing at the printer ;-)
MS Excel saves as .csv file. Also SPSS can open MS Excel data from File>Open>Data>Excel. Ages recorded in decimals can be analyzed as a continuous variable, and also in decimals. Or, it can be converted to the nearest whole number, if desirable.
you can do any calculation on SPSS. if you want to change the numeric variable into categorical then you can do it by using main option Transform and then change into different variable and for calculation BMI score you can use compute option.
Fast and easy way to categorize scale variables (age): Copy and paste your data in EXCEL. Use the ROUND or ROUNDUP FUNCTION (see http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/round-function-HP010342858.aspx). Copy and paste now the categorized data in SPSS. Too complicate in SPSS.
Hi Sophia, you cannot just copy from excel to WHO Anthroplus. I had similar challenges but i figured how to do it. Open an existing survey in WHO Anthroplus, Export the file to ms excel or press Ctrl A and Ctrl C to copy the data and paste in excel. Save this as your template. Delete the previous data and copy your own data into the various fields. Save the document with the format " Text (Tab delimited)". Open your WHO Anthroplus, click import file and select the document you just saved. Match the variables in the pop up window. this will open. Just try it. I have been working with it like this and it works pretty well, I have my template so i dont repeat it always.
You can use stat transfer software: first open stat transfer then choice st32 and open it. then in the input file select either your excel or spss data format. then in the output data, select data base III compatible. then click on transfer. finally open anthro-software...then click on nutrition survey, then select again nutrition survey on the right uper part of anthro-software....then select import from file....then after you can select the file format from which you transfer from the stat transfer data.
