I have conducted and published a systematic review and meta-analysis research with the topic related to public health and health pomotion (protocol was registed in PROSPERO).
Now we want to further study and analyse the intervention content in detail for each study included in the former systematic review, just like a content analysis. But the idea was not written in the original protocol.
Do we need to write a new protocol (with same inclusion criteria and search strategies) for it?
Yes, you do.
As long as it is a new study, with a different research question (and probably different hypotheses), you have to write a new protocol and register it.
Ideally, nothing should stop you from doing a systematic review (with or without meta-analysis) on exactly the same topic. If you think that the preceding PROPSERO protocol or publications emerging from it contains aspects you do not want or you feel was left out, then please register and conduct another systematic review as you see fit, so as long as you acknowledge that the systematic review topic, or at least parts of the protocol, has been considered before. It would perhaps be advantageous for you to specify in the text what is particularly unique with your research plan.
I believe that systematic reviews, like all sources of evidence, should also be subjected to the same research ideas of judicious replication. Of course, a perfectly similar second systematic review is problematic (and would likely not be considered especially by the average journal), but I expect that doing an exact copy of a previous systematic review is not your plan.
