Currently I am studying the electrical response of thin film to the gas. I am using chronoamperometry to get the response in terms of current-time graph. However, I am not sure the proper potential that I should apply to the sample. Some groups used 1V, but others used 3V, or even 4V.
I am also curious what the effect to chronoamperometry process if we apply different potentials.

Please can you provide a little more information regarding your experminetal setup? Approximately, what is the thin film (metal, polymer, etc.)? What is the gas you are trying to detect? What is the response of the thin film being measured with respect to (e.g., are you measuring in aqeuous or gas phase and what is your reference electrode?). If you are measuring in a solvent, then the electrochemical window of the solvent may limit the potentials that you can apply in chronoamperometry (CA).
In "typical" experiments with CA it is normal to first perform cyclic voltammetry CV. This will help characterise your system and allow you to set the CA potential such that it is just (typically 100 mV) past the peak potential of the reductive/oxidative process.
Thank you Jules Lloyd Hammond for your response. My sample is perovskite materials. The target gas is ammonia. I am trying to get current-time response in a constant voltage. I put the sample in a sealed chamber and connected my sample to potentiostat. When the gas come into the chamber, the sample will give response by changing the current. However, I am still hesitate whether i use the proper potential or not. Currently I set 3V on my experiment.
Cyclic voltammetry will provide the information regarding potential window of the system you have prepared. As mentioned above, we use less scan rate (mV/s) to have better interaction of the electrolyte ions with the active species. After getting proper potential window, you can proceed for other measurements like charge-discharge and many more. Literature will provide you some idea about the potential window of the materials you have prepared. Cyclic voltammetry will provide the confirmation.
