To apply my data into Anaerobic Digestion Model No. 1, I need to convert the concentration of my substrate into mgCOD/l. Please assist me how to do this.
Total lipid concentration : 4140 mg/l
Total protein concentration : 2162.5 mg/l
Total carbohydrate concentration : not determined
Soluble COD : 9180 mgCOD/l
I want to convert total lipid, total protein and total carbohydrate concentrations form mg/l into mgCOD/l.

Unfortunately, an accurate calculation of the COD is practically impossible when you’re working with a real wastewater, simply because the COD will be a function of the exact wastewater composition. Hence, you would need to know: a) the composition of all different components (e.g. there may be many different types of lipids/proteins, etc. present in the wastewater. These concentrations of these individual components and their relative propertion will affect the COD.
Even if you would have the possibility to identify all components and their corresponding concentrations, your model will not be usefull, because the chemical composition of a certain wastewater is never constant.

chemical compositios of lipids, proteins and carbohydrates vary (ie Number of carbon atoms, hence the COD), so theoretical calculation is not possible.
what is the objective of your model?
We have done some study related to VFA and biogas. In case your objective is related to energy production and substrate composition, there may be other ways to achieve the same objective.
There may be some possibility with analysing large number of samples and developing statistical data. (But this is also nearly impossible).

There have no accurate way to convert Protein or fat direct to mgCOD/L. If you know the proper molecular formula of compound, then its possible, you can find may article related to this.
For your case, you can measure the COD of same amount of fat or protein solution by using spectrophotometry method, but still it would not be 100% reliable.
May be this is useful (from our extended network), it may show an alternative directions to achieve your objectives.
