How do I choose the right variant of the protein to make a primer for or should I design a general one? If the latter is the case, how do I go that?

I am designing primers for qPCR. I have a list of proteins that we suspect are involved in the observed accelerated growth of stimulated rat cells. I am using NCBI to search the proteins and their mRNA sequence, but there are many variants of these proteins.
