What I am trying to do in SPSS: I have two variables: one self reported and one reported by the partner (measured the same and both in the wide format). I would like to create a new variable that does the following: if the item for the self reported variable is missing, take the item reported by the partner. Any suggestions?
COMPUTE NewVar = SelfRating.
IF MISSING(NewVar) NewVar = PartnerRating.
EXECUTE.
Of course, you'll have to replace NewVar, SelfRating and PartnerRating with your own variable names. And you'll want to add VALUE LABELS, etc. HTH.
I would also undertake a paired t-test on the data you do have to test if there is no significant difference s between variables, if the null is not supported why would you use the partner variables?
