Killing of badgers has just started in parts of England on the assumption that they are the natural reservoirs of TB and pass this on to cows. Do cows infect badgers? I don't understand exactly how this transmission happens. All the media seems to be interested in are the feelings of badgers, farmers and animal rights protesters, and I don't recall seeing anything on this topic in non-specialist science journals. Why don't we hear about TB in (urban) foxes, rabbits, pigs, sheep, or sacred cows in India who surely don't catch TB from badgers?

This cull is highly controversial and is sure to lead to further fear and loathing of scientists, so I would like to be better informed in case I am confronted by an animal rights militant.
