I'm trying to form a complex between a polyphenol and several transition metals. What tests and analysis do I need to verify the complex formation and structure? I'm only using UV-Vis sperto and LC-Ms, is it enough?
Would you like to mention the polyphenols you are using is pure or extracted from any natural sources. But, if you want only to confirm the formation of polyphenols- Metal complex, try to take NMR of polyphenols before and after formation of complex. You will observe -OH proton shift or even absent.
according to the valuable answers of the above answerers, please define the structure of your polyphenol (position of the hydroxy group and number of hydroxyl group) and what a kind of metal. You can answer via message if your answer is confidential (only you and me can read your answer).
if you want to know the formation of the polypenol - metal complex you can used UV through the clear difference in wave length between the starting material and mixture, LC- MS through the injection of standard polyphenol and mixture the difference indecated the formation of complex .
I'm sorry I can't tell which polyphenols I'm working with, but I can tell you the metals; copper, iron (3), and zinc. I did find a clear difference in the UV spectrum between standard and the mixtures. Anyhow, the LC-Ms didn't give me clear results yet. I asked about NMR test but was told that it might not give clear results depending on the matrix of the solutions!
I'm still trying with LC-Ms analysis and would appreciate any reference mentioning the use of Ms to identify a complex!
