I plan to work on a stramtable (a physical model) to model a river. As I used to work on open-channel flumes, I was curious about the flow measurement. The depth and average velocity of water is quite low (maybe 2 cm and 1.5 cm/s).
What is the best approach or velocimetry for measuring the surface velocity in this situation?

Flow-tables have been used for many years to approximate complex flow situations as a 2-D analogue of a complex flow geometry. To map the streamlines, as Dudley Benton says, floating particles are commonly used. Injection of dyes was also used, but this prevents the liquid from being recycled around the system, which is usually okay if water is the fluid.
