We fabricated a solid state electrolyte for Li ion battery, and some negative ions are weakly bonded with neighboring positive ions, we guess the negative ions also contribute to the total ion conductivity. So we want to identify the kind of transport ions, is there any characterization methods can be used to do this? or any suggestions for help? Thanks very much.
You can manipulate the chemical environment near the electrolyte and see how the conductivity changes. When testing oxygen conductors, we have looked at conductivities at various partial pressures of oxygen (among other things), to check the conduction mechanism. In your case, you can probably check the conductivity of your electrolyte in solutions that are deficient of have excess of suspected conduction ions and see if there are any changes. Maybe check the conductivity effect of using a monovalent vs divalent anions, etc. I don't really know what your system is, but you can take some educated guesses at the expected chemical behavior of your membrane, and see how it would interact with different conducting species.
Is it possible, if you can perform Hall effect experiments. I think, it will be effective and interesting as well.
Electrophoresis wherein the ions migrate towards oppositely charged electrodes based on the charges carried by the ions. The technique concerned should serve your purpose of identifying the kind of transport ions.
