The buffer used for protein purification depends on the type of purification that you're going to perform: affinity, ion exchange, gel filtation, etc; the characteristics of the protein, PI mainly; the expression system: E.coli, eucaryote, insect cells... I recommend you to use a buffer with a pH 1-1.5 lower or higher than the PI of the protein. Please give more details if you want more advices.
I agree with the comments given by Jaime. Proteins/peptides have unique physicochemical properties. Thus, choosing a buffer that maintain a particular protein or peptide is a big task in protein/peptide research. I suggest you to perform a high-throughput screening platform for choosing a buffer condition that maintains your target protein/peptide in its soluble and stable form. You can use a factorial design for testing numbers of buffer conditions, such as pH, ionic strength, additives etc, simultaneously at different levels.
