Currently there are two medications to treat Hepatic Encephalopathy, Lactulose and Rifaximin. Lactulose is the older and wider used treatment and is cheap but has abundant side effects. Rifaximin is the newer drug, has very few side effects, treats HE but is more expensive. Clinical trial data from research suggests that over the span of time Rifaximin is the cheaper option due to fewer episodes that lead to fewer hospitalizations. The HE patient eventually needs a Liver transplant but the health state in which he reaches that destination is in our hands. What can we as care givers do to not only just improve their HE condition but also help them achieve a Quality of Life that allows them to continue to perform their job and house duties? Nutrition is an avenue that I am looking into along with my team and I want the opinion of others caregivers on how this can impact the QOL and any other way we can improve the QOL. Your feedback is greatly appreciated.
