i need to model a guyed tower in abaqus. The guy needs to be given an initial pretension. which element can be assigned to the guy so that it takes only tension and zero compression?
In regard to the initial pretension: What I've done in the past is simply add a time step in which you displace the nodes defining your cable in such a way that you achieve the desired amount of prestretch before you begin with your actual simulation. Depending on your situation that may also naturally prevent the cable from ever undergoing compression. Makes sense? Best.
You should define a truss element in Abaqus. Of course, it would take also compression. In order to apply a pretension, you should make a partition at the mid-point of the truss, and at this node you should apply the bolt load. Choosing 'adjust length' option, you can calibrate the axial force to be applied.
