You should install the compiler and link the envoironment variables!

The error message appears to you, is normally in case that you had written the UDF in language based on win32... you need to upgrade the UDF environmental language before trying to import inside the  ANSYS

Did you try to use interpret instead of compile

I had the same issue and tried almost everything on the internet!

I have windows 8, fluent 15 and visual studio 2013.

The solution was simple, apparently there needs to be no spaces in the names of the files and addresses. So I changed my working directory to a folder like C:\TEMP , and also renamed my case and data files to a.cas a.dat. The UDF file should also be in the same folder (here, C:\TEMP for example)

The problem was solved.

As mentioned by Ibrahim, there are two ways to implement UDFs in fluent: 1) interpret 2)compile

Interperting (in fluent: Define>User-Defined>Functions>Interperted) is like MATLAB, your code will be translated into Assembly language and will run line by line. This is really easy to do and gives you no compatibility errors, but at the same time imposes many limitations with using pointers, and also is slow.

In compiling, you create a library that will be later combined into fluent's solver, this is fast and has no limitations, but you need to have a compiler in hand. 

I suggest you start by Interpreting a simple code first. The best resource will be Fluent's UDF manual. You can find a copy here: http://orange.engr.ucdavis.edu/Documentation12.0/120/FLUENT/fludf.pdf

you can define UDFs that can be used in UDS transport

equations in ANSYS Fluent. See User-Defined Scalar (UDS) Transport Equations in the User’s Guide for UDS equation theory and details on how to set up scalar equations. Descriptions of DEFINE macros for UDS applications are provided below. Definitions of DEFINE macros are contained in the udf.h header file

dynamic mesh UDFs that are defined using DEFINE_CG_MOTION,

DEFINE_DYNAMIC_ZONE_PROPERTY, DEFINE_GEOM, and DEFINE_GRID_MOTION can only be

executed as compiled UDFs.

whats version of your fluent?if it is 6,you have to install visual studio,then you have to run fluent by visual studio command prompt (sdk).this is for compile in fluent.if you want to use interpret in fluent you dont need this.

             Although, This topic is almost complete and you have found a solution as you mentioned. But As I read this topic here, CFD forum, Google and youtube., I want to add my experience because I found the easiest solution in this regard. That would be helpful for beginners..

No need to change working directory or root path or open Fluent from command prompt or many complex environment variables with caps sensitive.

System : Windows 7 , Fluent 16 , Visual studio 2012 Professional ( all 64bit )

There are basically four Environment Variables for users. lib , include, path, FLUENT_INC, it is recommended to install all software in C Drive. Then add first three variables by yourself., like

include  -   C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\VC\include;C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\Include;

lib -  C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\VC\lib\amd64;C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\Lib\x64

path -  C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\VC\bin\amd64;C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\Common7\IDE;

After this the 4th variable is updated by your system itself. No need to write by your own. Just follow the following path** and find this file (setenv) double click on it, there would be a question to modify to environment ? say Yes ! 

** path to find setenv file -  C:\Program Files\ANSYS Inc\v160\fluent\ntbin\win64\setenv.exe

then 4th variable is automatically updated on the environment variable window..

Finally, Restart your system and there will not be any problem to load your UDFs if you have already made a folder that contain mesh, case, and source code UDF file.( follow the fluent manual procedure for compile)

Have a look for four environment variables..

Hi Radwan, 

The reason of this error is that previous versions of Visual Studio are 32bit and do not work with your x64 version of Fluent. In this regard, I tested various software and finally the Microsoft Visual Studio 2013 solved my problem.

Win 7, EDEM 2017.2, ANSYS 18.0, Visual Studio Community 2017, edem_coupling_build_post_2017.2.zip

 I have tried a different ways from this chat how to compile and load a journal file into the fluent but no results are comming.. 🙁

Do you have any other tips how to solve the problem?

no but I already solved the problem with missing libudf.dll file...

A new version of GUI compiler was added in EDEM forum and it works very well.

Some kind of bug was founded in old version.

There are some videos in youtube that teaches how to compile the UDF´s. It is a bit tricky.

Hi all, I followed what was described in some answers. I added the requested environmental variables. Things worked pretty when I launched "fluent" using the command prompt. However, when I tried with workbench, nothing works. I got first the following error " fatal error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'stdio.h': Invalid argument" while building. And then the same error as before " The UDF library you are trying to load (G:\ship\libudf) is not compiled for 3d on the curent platform (win64). " while loading. I need to work with Workbench. The reason of this error is incompatibility of MS visual Studio with fluent version, try to install Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 and compile your udf in fluent only instead of ansys WB

Step 1: Find the console of Environment variables---My Computer->Properties->Advanced-> Environment variables

Step 2: Change or add three Environmental variables below:

I. INCLUDE (capital letters) C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\VC\include;C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\Include

II. LIB (capital letters) C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\VC\lib\amd64;C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\Lib\x64

III.Path (small letters) C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\VC\bin\amd64;C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE;C:\Program Files\ANSYS Inc\v145\fluent\ntbin\win64

Step 3: Start Fluent from "Visual Studio x64 Cross Tools Command Prompt" by just typing "fluent" in the command prompt.

Step 4: Include the correct working directory while launching Fluent from GUI.

Step 5: Compile the UDF normally: Define --> User defined --> Compiled --> etc..

Hi all. i have written a UDf for implementation of some radiation and thermal conductivity model which i will hook in solid conductivity.Both a and b represent temperature dependent solid and gas conductivity. i dont see any erro in code. but when i interpreting it it shows. receive a fatal signal (segmentation fault).

I am trying to load my udf in Fluent, I am using fluent 18.1 with VS2017.

Previously I got the ''nmake'' error, then I changed my environment variables and that helped to solve it>> but I got another error which is

Ahmed Hasan you need to install all VS required add-ons unfortunately... It uses only compilers but it will take so much HDD capacity :(

also please try new expression language features of Fluent.
