Dear researchers,
I am trying to extract traffic-related particulate matter collected from high volume impactor. The filters I used was Pallflex Emfab filters( Pure borosilicate glass microfibers glass cloth reinforced PTFE bonded). Published studies showed a lower extract rates when extraced PM from the filters.
Can anyone provide a high-efficiency protocol for extracting PM from the filters?

Filter extraction techniques are typically analyte specific. What are you hoping to measure in the extract?

Thanks for you attention. In this procedure, I mostly would like to enhance the rates of particles extracted from PTFE bonded filters and then perform biological study using these particles. Both the organic and and water soluable compounds are of interest. However, I need to keep the glass microfiber into minimum in the final extract.
I would appreciate if you could give me some suggestions.

Water soluble constituents can be easily extracted using water sonication. You will probably need to vacuum filter the extracts to be sure you remove any filter fibers or dislodged aerosols. In terms of the organic extraction you will probably want to limit yourself to methanol so you do not affect your toxicology tests.
