In terms of the shape of clasts the standard shapes are rod, sphere, disc and blade and these are derived from Zingg's (1935) classification. This classification system uses the measurements from the A, B and C axes with the cut off being 0.67 (see page 113 in the text by Gardiner V & Dackombe R 1983. Geomorphological Field Manual. In terms of roundness this has been a visual assessment.
I was wondering if you were looking for an image processing system, in such case the answer depends very much on the dataset you are going to use. Automated recognition from single images isn't working perfectly as yet in gavel environments.
