What is magenic ? Do you mean magnetic ? If so the statement is in my opinion much too simple. You cannot detect climatic changes by the kappameter or measuring the susceptibility. This is not feasible. Both well-known feromagntic minerals pyrrhotite and magnetite respond in a different way to weathering. Pyrrhotite is the least resistant mineral and magnetite is the most resistant one. Martite can be formed under supergene and hypogene conditions. Unless you do not know the composition of the mineral association in question in the soil type, there is no way of discrimination.
Dependent on the geological era of the sediments and their proximity to the warmer and wetter parts of the Earth at that time (e.g. tropical rain forests), will dictate the degree of weathering and proportion of iron compounds.
