If you don't necessarily adhere to relational DB, you can use a document-oriented database such as MongoDB

Instead you can create a folder for saving image on the server. Just keep the name and location of those image in database. This is going to reduce the memory. You can easily save image from Matlab using inbuilt functions. 

Store the features in the header file of each image. Hence you will have self-contained images.
