I am using a rectangle Ni foam electrode area: (0.5 * 1 = 0.5 cm2) for OER and applying material to the area (0.5 * 0.5 = 0.25 cm2) and depositing the same area in the solution. Now, do I need to divide the obtained current by the deposited area (0.25 cm2) or the total area of the electrode (0.5 cm2) to get current density/Cm2?
If you are referring to the catalyst that actually takes part in the reaction, when you say "applying material", then you should divide the obtained current density by the deposited area.
P.S. Many people also refer the catalyst layer as the "electrode".
the current density is calculated in relation to the active surface of the electrode, normally calculated automatically by the software.
