I am planning on doing quantitative content analysis and have nearly 1000 pdfs ready for my analysis - any advice on which free online software to use?
Or If I use Nvivo is there an easy way to make the pdfs readable/searchable?
Any references I should read before I start?

The latest version of Nvivo apparently works with PDFs natively. I don't have as much as data as you, and I've been using the free version of QDA Miner, but have had to convert PDFs to RTF in Acrobat, which has been a pain. I recommend Nvivo. Mendeley is quite useful for informally searching through the text of PDFs, but does not have the coding or quantitative tools you may be looking for.
I use a program called Nitro Pro 9 - it detects the PDFs that aren't searchable and converts them for you. They offer a free trial too, though I daren't think about how many over those 1000 PDFs you'll end up having to convert!
It works a dream with NVivo, though, so it's definitely worth a look at.
