Whenever you must choose an ELISA kit, consider the following points.

1. Credibility

Look out for ELISA kits that are preferred by scientists and practitioners around the world. Viewing publications will provide you with a good feel to see if the particular ELISA kit is a good fit for you and the research you are conducting.

2. Sensitivity

The sensitivity is the lowest detection level of the marker that the antibody pair used in the ELISA kit can detect. Sensitivity is usually dependent upon specific characteristics of the ELISA such as type, antibodies, antigens, etc.

3. Specificity

It is irritating when one comes across cross-reactivity. The antibodies have attached themselves to some other molecule instead of the target analyte. Also, interference happens when components in the sample matrix change antibody-antigen interaction, inhibiting the antibodies to find the target analyte. Look out ELISA kits that have been optimized for minimal to no cross-reactivity and interference. In the kit’s specifications, remember to check for any cross-reactivity information provided by the manufacturer.

4. Sample Species & Type

ELISA kits can be validated for a wide range of samples, which could include cell culture supernatant, serum, plasma, cell lysate, and tissue. Select an ELISA kit that is compatible with your sample. If you are not sure, you may contact the support team.

5. Reproducibility

Evaluate the precision of an ELISA kit by taking note of the coefficient of variation (CV) values for inter- and intra-assay precision. CV values must be below 10%. ELISAs must be subjected to rigorous validation and demonstrate precision. Therefore, request for the validation data namely, documents pertaining to the inter- and intra-assay variabilities for each batch of ELISA kits for your evaluation. These data will help assess whether the ELISA kit will perform consistently and generate reproducible quality results that allow sample data to be comparable over time.

The problem is that, regardless of the degree of supportive evidence for a kit, you can almost always find an ELISA kit for what you need. However, there is this 'shady' area of ELISA kits that lack supporting evidence (e.g., publications) and are sold by several companies—usually none of which are well-known or bona fide providers.

That’s where I am right now. For instance, selecting an ELISA kit for common and well-studied proteins such as C-Myc or albumin is easy. However, when searching for less-studied targets, you may still find kits, but it’s hard to trust their quality.

I was hoping someone could vouch for any of these companies:
