I am conducting research on women's experience of fear of crime in public spaces. I will compare foreign literature to my findings, however, I cannot assume that there is an existing fear of crime, so I am stuck with how do I ask if there is a fear of crime without directly asking it. Thank you so much.
I would ask about the issue of crime more generally first in your research setting. If you are using in-depth interviews then this should open the conversation up to more how they feel about crime in the area, et cetera.

are you interested in a specific aspect oft crime?
You could ask for example how women get back from a party and what influences their choice. Or you could present scenarios which may be perceived as threatening due to fear of crime. Then you could see whether fear of crime influences their behaviou and decisions. It is a rather indirect way of asking, but I think you influence the answers less.

One approach is to use psychographics. In the link - the study on fear-based advertising, the researchers argued for a demographic based approach as opposed to psychographic profiling and other methods. Perhaps since you have fixed the demographic profile, it is time to use psychographics- going from the direct to the indirect.

I'm sorry, I thought I answered this question already. I believe focus groups followed by survey-type interviews would be best. When I have time I can provide more information it you like. I believe this is a good method based on certain techniques used in the survey field which provide information about processes rather than outcomes in a novel way.

If there is specific fear about walking the streets or some other way in which the fear is likely to appear under specific conditions, then you can get individuals to respond to small vignettes with responses that reduce the likelihood of triggering forms of social desirability in their responses. Factorial surveys are good ways of integrating these vignettes into your research approach to surveying women about specific kinds of fears of crime.
