Based on the study "Challenges facing Blood Transfusion Services at a Regional Blood Transfusion Center in Western Kenya" conducted by Kavulavu et al. (2022), blood donors at ERBTC are typically 31 years old, predominantly male, aligning with SSA trends, while female donors are scarce, attributed to the belief that males are healthier. Moreover, a 7.8% discard rate, mainly due to TTIs (Transfusion-transmissible infections) and inadequate volumes, mirrors other studies. These TTIs pose a significant challenge, with a 14.1% prevalence among prospective donors in Kenya and accounted for 5.3% to 8.7% of blood discards across African regions in 2013. By this, strict adherence to donor selection policies, focusing on voluntary donor recruitment, can mitigate TTIs and reduce discards.
