Hi guys, I need your help identifying this phytoplankton?
I took this sample in fresh water on the São Francisco River
the family i believe is merismopediaceae
within the genre I believe it's Coelosphaerium

The cells look like Microcystis. There are no organelles visible and I can see aerotopes. But I have never seen them inside such a perfectly spherical envelope. Is it a coincidence or are all the colonies like that?

For posititve identification I'll need pictures in different focal planes with a scale bar. And in what kind of habitat were they collected?
Did you use lugol in this sample?
I think it's unlikely to be genus Microcystis (due to the spherical envelope).

Regarding the measurements, the length, the colony is 16.5µm, the largest cell 1.65µm and the smallest 0.825µm. It looks like some Coelosphaerium (spherical cells just under surface of spherical colony).
for M. wesenbergii the cels are too small, if it is not a Coelosphaerium, perhaps it is an Aphanocapsa.
I agree with Ms. Maria ... it could be Aphanocapsa...
Please check the scale of your photo, because resolution and quality of the photo look extraordinary good for so small cells in LM.
It looks like having bigger cell diameter than you have indicated.
Its general appearance seems to be more sutable for Microcystis wesenbergii.

Mycrocyst and aphanocapsa are closely similar however aphanocapsa are oval in shape
