It sounds to me like post stroke central pain. These are very difficult to treat & needs to be via medications or deep brain stimulation. This can be accessed through a neurologist/pain physician/neurosurgeon. This will not address your back pain

I can't comment on medications, but I have seen a number or patients who do not wish to take pharmaceutical for their chronic pain.

In my experience, as both a clinician and a patient, I have found an integrative approach that includes medication, physical therapy/physiotherapy and complementary therapies such as shiatsu or acupuncture to be most effective. Complementary therapies can help increase the mind-body connection while easing pain and increasing function. With chronic pain psychological interventions can also be very helpful, particularly Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy. 

Self-management interventions are extremely important for people with chronic conditions, particularly chronic pain, as they are beneficial for both physical and mental health. Self-management interventions have been shown to increase feelings of control and mastery in persons with chronic conditions. Any good physiotherapist, shiatsu therapist or massage therapist could provide you with some appropriate self-care techniques (self-massage, stretching, etc.)

Dear all of you,

  Thank you for our answers. First I do aquatherapy twice a week and water aerobics twice a week. It does help some.Second there has been a change in my diagnosis and medication. I do have several mental illness' such as BiPolar1. I have been diagnosed with ADHD and my new psychiatrist took me off my Requip, Cymbalta, and I cannot remember the third one. I take 25 pills a day including 6 primidone, 2X3 times daily. I do know one thing, I am able to sit still and lay still instead of driving my poor husband crazy. I used to joke that if they had that diagnosis when I was a kid they would have diagnosed me. I do believe I have had it since I was a kid. After it was all explained to me it all made sense. I am now taking Adderall and Zanax. Thus the pain clinic had a fit. I do not take any narcotics from the pain clinic. Now, the Adderall will lighten your appetite. In not quite a month I have lost 22 pounds and my back does not hurt as much. With me not squirming or moving my foot and hands all the time my pain has lightened up on my stroke side. Ya all, things are so different and I feel different. it's like  it is a whole different world. I do not care what the pain clinic says, this is working for me. You all have no idea how much I appreciate your answers. If ever you wish to ask me any questions about anything please feel free to. I have a long story and so much that I have been through. Now despite my new diagnosis I am doing good in my classes. At 57 I graduated with my Associate's of Arts with a concentration in Psychology. I suffer from several different mental illnesses as I said. For the first time I love my life and no one can ever take my degree away from me, I earned it and it's mine.    You all take care and again with all my heart, thank you.

Thank you, Tony, that is the question I am going to ask about when I go back. I just have so much going on in my body. And thank you for that encouragement in taking control of my body. 

Wow, Kathi, what an incredible story and thank you for sharing a bit of it with us. I'm so happy to hear that you're getting your life back. As Tony said, managing the pain and increasing function is the aim and you know best what it working well for you.
