It is very interesting when you immerse yourself in the analysis of people you communicate with on a daily basis on RG portal. You see very different people, scientists from different fields, different continents, different races and religions, etc. Do you have more followers or those who follow you? Very often you meet the same people to participate in discussions and communicate with each other, right? The question of upvoting and endorsements may give some indication also! Did you follow the published papers only in your disciplines and topics? The same can be asked for questions that you follow. What are your experiences about? I was inspired to ask this question by the Research Gate annual report for 2013! Some of these observations may be found under the thread for which the link was provided!
I am enrolled in ResearchGate portal for about a year, but started and realize the potential of interaction recently when I received a very interesting orientation of a China researcher about a study we are doing here in Brazil. From that moment I started to interact with greater frequency and realize that other researchers are contacting seeking demands, suggestions and queries about issues related to our areas of research. I realize that this initiative can be powerful because it displays a large volume of researchers with a quick and easy interaction between different countries, continents and cultures.
The visibility provided by conventional scientific media favors the larger centers. And the RG has the potential to democratize this process by joining people with different skills and experiences, but complementary. All this would be impossible otherwise.
I don't keep statistics, but I would put the number at 10 peers, with whom I correspond socially. Then, I am nearly 2 years on RG, so, somehow, 200 people follow me, and I follow 700 peers. That keeps me busy.
There are over 3 million participants on RG. Estimating the avareged number of papers per peer at 10, some 30 million papers are posted on RG.
As this is impossible to see them all, a question can be posted, peers will send their files.
In the case a Scientist wishes to share his results with others, he/she does not need to wait untill his paper is found. There is SHARE option, the paper can be shared with the followers. I only recently realised about this option, started to use, getting good responce. I recommend others to do the same.
@Vasile, according to first level of interactions that You have mentioned in Your response, I may say that a new photo (look) will bring improvement! That is what I told by @Cyril commenting on my changed photo! :)
I joined Research Fate 2 years ago.
Very useful Research Forum.
The contacts and Follow- Up emails, all resulted in:
1) Joint Research Collaboration and joint Submissions
2) Technical Visits and research assignments
3) Exposure to new areas of research and innovative
Extensions.
4) Updated World Research Collections and Techical Paper Sharing.
5) information of new Areas and innovations in Research.
6) short Term Research Assignments and appointments.
Dear Sir,
I appreciate your question and I have daily visited to RG website , to see my personal stats. I found thereof my RG score is very less and saw some of the researcher ' s RG score is very high and thought that How their RG score is high and I wanted to know the fact . So, then started following them irrespect of research fields. By doing this following I have some experiences / ideas to increase my RG Score and establish my profile . Second point of the question , I have not kept any statistics where I have followed them except I saw their Overviews and also, about my personal statistics and followers more percentage of Science researchers and FTD from topology researchers.
Sir, I have this much of answer for your question.
Thanks and regards
Dr.Govindappa Navalagi
No, like my dear friend Alexander, I don´t keep statistics on my followers and my followees. I try to treat everyone as human beings, not as numbers. The concept of "following" is half-amusing to me: it reminds me of "brown-nosing," as dogs do, and as a retiree, I have no reason to cater to anyone, canine or human. Stlll, there are some people on here that I admire very much for their personalities and their accomplishments, and I freely tell them so! So should everybody.
I follow and read published papers in many disciplines that are not my own. Researchgate is stretching my mind left and right. That is why I have slightly more followees than followers. The quantity changes, though, and when I see the number of followers getting greater, I hurriedly click on a few more followees.
Dear Professor,
According to my observations (not statistical) can imagine that such quick feedback from the international scientific community, I have never met. It helps and stimulates thinking on problems with different types of difficulty.
Dear Ljubomir
I have less followers compared to those I follow. I have no statistics but what I think is fascinating to have contact with different segments of the academic world . I joined the RGgroup less than 1 year and certainly my overall knowledge increased greatly. This makes me more informed, more happy, more participatory besides the unique opportunity to share opinions with researches from around the world. This is a new phase in my life.
I did not do any statistics but I am really very satisfied with what I am doing for example my RG score was 5.2 then after very hard working and communication with scientist answering question the value of RG increased in three stages until it reached 26 which is a very good progress
I have not done any statistics on ResearchGate.
My aim of joining RG is to increase my domain of knowledge and share my thoughts with other members.
Regards,
Nitish
Thank you Dr.Lubojumir for the good question and the fruitful discussion
@Ljubomir, I never did any statistics - but perhaps it is worth to do. And, what about you? You have extremely high number of followers.
@Linas, it is a huge job, I did it some statistics. Brief statistics may help in better time schedule, as well as with efficient time spent on! I do not agree on extremely nuber of followers! See the ratio following/followers! There are many scientist with number of followers much grater than mine! Check around! Good luck!
PS: I started to follow You! :)
No, I expect Researchgate will some day do the stas for me. But this network is quickly growing in interest.
I hardly bother about statistics. I come across RG when I was searching for some information then signed in. My score was nothing at that time. Out of my interest started answering questions slowly score started increasing. Later uploaded my publications then noticed the score increased considerably. If you complete all details certainly you get good score. First of all if you have good publications automatically your score raise a lot.
I like to answer questions (when I have free time) so that we can improve our subject wise knowledge too in spite of RG score.
It's not the score I am in, its information. sorry, if score for someone is the main result. I even did not care to put all papers (but hope to have time). Several comments here made my life more fruitful.
I do not worry about my score. I am just quite happy , when I do find answers that I could not find myself. I must be a simple and a normal person. I do not know ( The others to judge ????). Martha 서 효 자
No actually, I have not - but seems to be a good idea - however, I do not think anyone would pursue this! some might if such work would have a positive impact on the RG rank of the person involved - though I believe the majority are looking for information from like-minded people! and no matter what is your score it is the type of question or comment that you participate.

Theodora Issa
I have no idea on what to base the evaluation. Dear you may be suggesting one to me
Not thought about it yet... however, you can go to each of the pages of those whom you follow and go to their statistics page and take it from there.
I welcome any easier way to doing this.
Regards
Theodora Issa
Interesting concept! Would like to try it out but I wonder if its feasible?
I think, this is an idea to evaluate and compare the state of each member, however, part of the statistic (descriptive but not analysis) was given by the RG weekly which describes the state for each item (e.g., download, profile, questions, answers..etc). Regarding analysis, it is one I should thing about it.
I have 308 followers, and I am following 348. Age of my followers forms a bimodal frequency distribution! Hardly 5% of them are from the country I live in.
These statistics would be very useful, especially for users who have hundreds or thousands followers and followings.
I'm thirsty for knowledge, that's why it's extremely interesting to be in this fascinating world of wise and creative human beings from all over the world. In the process of discussion we can know better each other Thus, I found some friends here and we are going communicating on Facebook It's the greatest intellectual pleasure to read answers, articles, to find good words to own address, to admire success of the researchers.Being a philologist and linguist, I have an opportunity to find valuable materials on Physics and Maths for my gifted students, for my friends-scientists who can't write English. Besides, I discuss some interesting topics with my friends- researchers and my students, too. They are waiting for my news from RG.
I had only 20 followers in the start and I was following about the same number of people. But its interesting to note that as soon as you start following a large number of people, they follow you back too.
I upload my papers and download all the papers I like... Research Gate is an asset for researchers and I enjoy interacting with researchers far more than chatting with friends on facebook.
Very interesting discussion, Ljubomir.
The number of researchers I follow is higher than the number of followers (about factor 2).
As a matter of fact, I do follow researchers and their papers not only in my fields. It is exciting to get a broader view; this is reflected in the question and answers, too.
Science is much more than “ a chair in an Expert´s Tower” ;)
This makes RG so interesting, in my opinion .
No I have not done any Statistics, except from the simple descriptive one: counting!
I have noticed that when I am in form and ask good questions or give good answers, then people recognize it and that's an index of good health of this scientific forum. If this property vanishes in the future, then I will simply get away...

Happy Republic Day to you and all Indians @Asitabh.
Long live the Great Nation India. We all love it.
I was told that my thread has not been removed, but it is a result of system malfunctioning, and it is going to be my question again, very soon! So keep on posting! A few dozen of thread upvotes will appear again, I hope! Regards!
There is a problem in posting the answers, but with refresh button, it is OK!
@Ganesh, delete last two posts, since You made a triplicate!
I believe that this question will be mine again with new contributions made!
It is funny, "Closed account asked a question"!!! That 's I am! The whole week has passed, what happens?!!!
statistics or not is for all those things you mentioned that I adore RG,
breaks down barriers!

There is some serious problem being faced by some users of RG related to scores and statistics, hope RG improves the system as its a great place to interact with researchers and I have become addicted to talking to u all.

Dear Research Gate Community Liaison,Alexandra, Steve et all, when am I going to get my question back to my property, and everything that follows as a consequence? Not to mention the consequences ...! Three weeks and a couple of days is not a promptness!!! I am a bit disappointed!
Dear contributors, I have got the apology for the inconvenience! Seems that there will be no solution for this thread!

Not the score, not the stats. it's knowledge and friendship we should be interested in most to make the quality of our life better--it is to be hoped!
On RG, I enjoy watching the size of the scientific community with whom I interact, cooperate, and exchange scientific publications, ideas and experiences, grow all the time!
@AB Thanks for the tip on Sharing
@LJ Thanks for sharing this question.
We can not access the RG database on following/followers, So no scope of any analysis. However, going through manually some idea can be made.
Once I asked RG "How can I send NY Greetings or invitation to following and followers? "NO, you can not" came the reply.
I feel we should have access to the following and followers database.
@Ljubomir, I always thought you will get back this thread. It's INTUITION, women seem to have more intuition than men :)))
Sent from mobile.
Sometimes its better to be in a knowledgeable community instead of doing stats on it.
Will come back later on to reply with some personal thoughts on the question(s) Ljubomir wants to have answered......
at this point I am / I was just taking the time to test the statistics with this thread:
I found (see above) 19 upvotes (not checked), 0 downvotes, and 67 answers (1020 views) so far.
I have counted in my own system only 64 answers
(the 16 or 17 comments on Ljubomir's to ResearchGate customer service

So: what do you think about (:-)) (Carnival's weekend approaching!
Best regards,

My apologies for counting less.... such can happen....if you don't count double or 3x replies...
nobody needs to count again...

My dear friend, Wolfgang. I am glad that somebody has made it loud and clear at last!!!!
Dear Marwan,
I am delighted and feel honored....
Have a good time,
best regards,Wolfgang
Speaking about statistics, here are some ideas: number of messages inside ResearchGate, how many women/men from Asia/South America..., how many people you communicate on a daily basis within the RG, ...,... etc. Yes, interesting statistics, many different statistics can be made! Maybe someone fall in love with a colleague from the RG? Number of joint papers with colleagues from the RG, the number of joint research, exchange visits ...! These are the issues when I was speaking about statistics!
I am reviewing my list and at the same time trying to go to each colleague's site. I feel that I have to know my people by name before counting, So, I will wait on the statistics. My priority is human interaction first and that way I learn more.
Regards to all.
I do agree to Lachezar. We are Homo Sapiens before being a scientist. I do not have just enough time to worry about the stastistics for my profile. I think that the life is too short to think about only your own carrier. We are social beings. Many terrible diseases are the social problems( ex.AIDs and sexually transmitted diseases ). .However, the statistics are very useful means to study the ethiology of deadly diseases ( epidemiology). This is confucious philosophy ( oder nur meine Meinung ?). Have a very nice and productive day!

I do not make statistics, but just have a wonder: how many interesting threads I missed. This could be best statistics form me - ratio of threads.
As for the personal score, this is, well, some kind of game. It is (pergaps) not correlated to social score - but hor can I know, just collect statistic by hand? I would like to have general statistics in the RG page, at least yearly: averages, distributions (sex, age, country, affilation, discipline, etc.) and some correlations.
My dear colleagues, the example of a fact which is useful for statistics, is a visit of @Lijo Francis to @Nelson Oringer! That counts!
There are certain common features on people we follow & those of whom who follow us in RG . This happens because of participation in Q & A segment , where the discussion revolves around topics , which are of common interest to science , regardless of the speciality of the researcher . The participant would feel comfortable answering a question , which is relevant to his interest . This is definitely valuable to the researcher & reveals that there are many common features in science , which is beyond the field of work of the researcher . This would would make a definite impact on science . The researcher is aware on how his publications are viewed by the number of downloads & views & the statistics segment reveals the relevant data on the the author's popular publications . The RG score is based on publications & scores based on Q & A participation & this is a unique method of assessing a researcher , who should not hesitate to discuss his views on various other aspects of science.
@Prof Ljubomir et al., you will probably know that I have not provided any answer on this thread at all; and you CAN all guess that I don't do stats at all about those friends I follow, or those who are kind to follow me.
When I have some bits of free time, what I do is to go to the pages of my followers, upvote some of their questions or answers, or activate their threads. That's all I have time to do after my students, my writing etc, I'm not the perfectionist :)
@Ayaz, I'm not a professor. So you also are aware that I have not made any comment on this thread...
But one of these days Prof Ljubomir and you will have SO MANY followers that you can't keep up your stats :))
Congrats Prof Ljubomir and Ayaz. Both of you have MANY followers, because you are kind to follow small flies like me. There are some people who don't want to follow too many people. Perhaps they don't like people like me who share our questions to their RG box...
@Miranda, @Mohammad, I had 621 followers 25 days ago! It was some discussion about in thread that is given by following link!
Today I have 739 followers! Some statistical issues? What is really a meaning of such increment?
https://www.researchgate.net/post/Out_of_all_the_Research_Gate_members_how_many_participate_actively
@Prof Ljubomir et al., yes, they like you because you are generous to share your knowledge. But you also need to consider your other priorities, health, family etc. Take good care, and take your time to respond to requests :)
@Miranda, number of following/followers is quite specific thing. I personally do not call you "small fly", as you did some post earlier - just we are of different science directions. Thus, do not judge directly. I am following many persons without pushing button "Follow".
@Linas, then your followers clicked on the button 'Follow' :)
I prefer to be humble, I'm from a poor family, as a kid, I made our own toys. Although my friends had commercial toys, I didn't. Besides, I believe God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble...
Knowledge is the most expensive capital on our planet. A factor of social progress is human intellect. From my dearest father I inherit his love and adoration to human beauty, uniqueness.I adore pluralism of opinions. It gives food for thought.
It is really interesting to immerse in the analysis of people I am communicating with on a daily basis on RG portal
Profs Ljubomir, Mahfuz, Ayaz: I salute you people who have the time to analyse our followers and those whom we follow!
Remember, our communication on social media is a lot more casual than communication within our family circles...
Dear Miranda, dear other friends and known colleagues on ResearchGate,
when I started to follow the intentions of and joining the ResearchGate platform (which was, if I remember correctly, in autumn 2009) it was neat to have all my publications (which aren’t much) in a ”data bank” where later on eventually other interested scientists could find “ancient work” which could be - at least – worth reading (or not). I am overwhelmed, how many colleagues meanwhile downloaded "my" publications (most of them I only was a coauthor having done less important “ancient” EM-work) and/or datasets, as well as have viewed, bookmarked and upvoted a lot of them. For me personally ResearchGate is / was a way also to communicate with younger colleagues to help with some knowledge most of them deserve(d). I have gotten a lot of “private” request for helping with and commenting on their current scientific&research work which are not displayed in RG-threads.
Then the issue “followers” and “following”: honestly I would like to admit that time necessary for “statistics” and myself following as many colleagues on ResearchGate is a really time consuming issue (if one takes care of those who are following as well as whom you follow). I appreciate to receive all those information on “newly published work” which are sent automatically and because my “scientific” as well as mind and aptitude is really “limited” – also due to my active work life - it would be unfeasible to manage such high numbers of people/colleagues. I don’t create or have statistics of my followers nor the colleagues I am following, but always am pleased to see their efforts and success when a new paper/article will be announced as having been published. Most of these article information is really valuable and appreciated since it / these publications / help me with my daily work and extend my knowledge. Therefore I am also really thankful if/when the publications either are saved to the ResearchGate data bank or – when under current copyrights – will be sent as a personal copy by ResearchGate messaging system or also to personal e-mail-account.
Since the number of colleagues in my specialized field is “rare” compared to other scientific/research fields (and I know that a lot of them are not active on ResearchGate )I am proud of being accepted with the number of my followers and follow most of those who either follow me or if these colleagues might have an interest that I am following them. But normally, one would perhaps to have think over a questionable strategy to follow anyone just to see of followers.
RGScore & Impact points: naturally it is interesting to see increasing the RGScore (not knowing really why and when but said to be related to "quantity and quality" of communication on the platform") but I would do so without earning increasing RGScore. Impact points are calculated from other sources and reflects - at least in my case - the publishing activity of my colleagues instead of originating from myself as first author. This might be the dark side of my Scientific Profile but also depending on the work I have to do and my duties in my profession.
Last point: postings which in my opinion are not only interesting but also contain basic and special information I didn’t know (especially in my field of interest) including my replies will be saved (also to maintain my “own” data bank” and as an evidence of my “activity” after once leaving / quitting to be an active member of ResearchGate (which I hope will be NOT in the near future despite retiring in 2014).
Wish you all a pleasant and successful time,
regards, Wolfgang
Behind the text there is a brightest, hard-working personality, keen on science, with his/her own experience, with his/her unique culture, with his/her ups and downs.Surely, every human being feels a personal sympathy for the human beings and their high level of professionalism, their discoveries, their quests. Our fascination with human beings' humor, wisdom, openness, insights is increasing and we are looking forward to exploring cultures, themes, problems. As for me, I'm proud to be a grain of this esteemed community.
Thank you Irina for sharing your opinions with us.
Likewise, I think numbers and statistics in RG or everyday life has a high correlation with our personality. I also believe "as our followers grows we have more responsibility in RG". In another word, we should not be arrogant at least in places like RG. The people (students and friends) who know me for years think I am humble! But i think there is still rooms for improvement.
My dear fellows, thanks for your valuable responses! I am back and I am glad about that!
Dear All, Lijo Francis, Patrick Low and others that you know are not able any longer to log in their RG account from yesterday. RG suspended their accounts without any reason. I don't know why, but I find this an outstanding abuse. Please help them and inform all other participants as this is a signal that things are not going in the right way in RG before it happens to you!
Regards
Gianni
Just to ask honestly: verified action by RG?
I personally too see some irregularities wondering about....not that I have been notified yet...but if it is true, one might argue breach of conditions of use??? (not to excuse RG if this was the reason)
Regards, Wolfgang
