Sf-900 serum free medium is a complete medium not requiring any supplementation or addition of serum. Also, serum free medium will contain surfactants that will help to decrease membrane shearing in suspension culture.

If you use Grace's insect medium supplemented with FBS, you will have to keep in mind the quality of serum for optimal cell growth. Serum from different vendors or different lots from the same vendor can vary in their ability to support optimal cell growth.

So, I would recommend the use Sf-900 serum free medium due to the following benefits:

Simplify purification of secreted recombinant proteins and downstream processing,

More consistent performance,

Better control over physiological responsiveness,
