what is the diameter of the following cells:
1. GM5565 human fibroblast skin cell;
2. PC3 (prostate cancer cells)
using microfluidic electrical impedance spectroscopy (µEIS) diameter of PC-3 cell is 33.39µm and Standard deviation is 7.00µm
As I was interested in this question in the context of adding this type of information in the Cellosaurus:
I went to a paper that measured the cell size for the NCI60 panel (which include PC3). That paper:

States that their result is on the sire of a company called Nexcelom:

I downloaded their table and they report a very different value for PC3: average diameter: 18.08 um with a STD of 2.69 um.
Can someone comment on this very high discrpancy in size compared to the first answer?

where figure 2 shows the diameters of 4 prostate cancer cell lines including PC3 and from that figure I get a reading of 15 +- 3 um. Which is quite close to the NCI-60 paper.

When I was working on Vero cells I got so much discrepancy from average 14.65 to 24um.. it all depend on circumstances and seeding conditions. Nevertheless, the results from http://www.nexcelom.com/landing/NCI-60-cell-table.php are based on adherent cells so they are smaller. we usually measure the diameter after trypsinization process.
When cell line is generated form some standardize method (either ATCC or somebody else), all cells of that cell line do have similar/same size if whole line is derived form single clonal expansion. However the cells we get from somebody/some other lab, most of the cases they differentiate/adapt depending on the culture condition or storage. That,s the cons of working with cell lines and certainly the experimental results varies.
Yes I quite agree with Hassan Issa Moussa, PC3 cell size depends on seeding condition. From experience, PC3 cell size tends to be bigger when lowly seeded.
