Powder detergent production

For those who are at the very beginning, I would like to share a flowsheet for the production of a powder detergent. It was developed in Aspen Hysys. A similar approach can be found in the paper attached. Can you identify which are the main differences in both approaches? How these models could be improved?

I have had 40 years experience building refinery/chemical plant simulations. Most set up problems seem to occur in distillation columns often because trays "dry up" during intermediate calculations when the program tries to converge the column to get a a solution.

Starting with large amounts of reflux or artificial liquid feed at the top of the tower to get initial convergence and then slowly backing out the artificial liquid feed in the converged case is often a good route to avoid this "dry tray during intermediate convergence calculation problem" and get to a converged case quickly. Once you get a converged case most simulators are usually very robust.

Thanks for your contribution and comments, I agree distillation is one of the most difficult operation to converge in process simulation models. Usually, good initial estimates can make the difference.

Are you still struggling with cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin in Aspen Plus? Here is a small contribution from Arael Alfonso Cardero on how to create these compounds in Aspen. Properties like the coefficients for solid heat capacities, molar volume equation, molecular weight, and heat formation are already added. All parameters were taken from the well-known: Development of an ASPEN PLUS Physical Property Database for Biofuels Components by Robert J. Wooley&Victoria Putsche.

For me, simulation is only about solving a more or less complex system of equations. We dealt with the real simulation in the case of analog machines. But that's the past

In the example: the synthesis of Methyl Acetate from Methanol and Acetic Acid in a catalytic distillation column. Please make sure to add properly the reaction as a React-Dist in the reaction form. Hope this could help.

Much chemical process modelling and/or simulation work can be done with the widely-used Microsoft’s Excel.

Application example ― Simulations carried in Excel 5.0 with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros ― The recursive least squares algorithm (RLS) allows for (real-time) dynamical application of least squares regression to time series. Years ago, while investigating adaptive control and energetic optimization of aerobic fermenters, I have applied the RLS algorithm with forgetting factor (RLS-FF) to estimate the parameters from the KLa correlation, used to predict the O2 gas-liquid mass-transfer, while giving increased weight to most recent data. Estimates were improved by imposing sinusoidal disturbance to air flow and agitation speed (manipulated variables). The power dissipated by agitation was accessed by a torque meter (pilot plant). The proposed (adaptive) control algorithm compared favourably with PID. Simulations assessed the effect of numerically generated white Gaussian noise (2-sigma truncated) and of first order delay. This investigation was reported at (MSc Thesis):

I have paper with RGIBBS reactor model and now i want to continue research that paper with RPFR .. But you know, there isn't any dimension data that can be used for the RPFR .. do you have any suggestion, what should I do? Thanks
