The most difficult aspect of construction above a solid waste landfill is the assessment of potential settlement and this is mainly due to the variability of the waste materials and the water content within the waste. Contamination aspects or gas production are also issues but those can be managed relatively easily.

* Unit weight

* Permeability

* Strength parameters such as: friction angle and cohesion

* Compressibility.

There are good research topics on landfill wastes management. A very interesting one is about investigating the geotechnical properties (e.g. grain size distribution, permeability, shear strength and compaction characteristics) of landfill liners. Such properties determine (1) the structural integrity of a landfill, and (2) the flow relationships between landfill contents and groundwater.
