What does band area indicate in FT-IR (absorbance). I have different band area at same wavelength in control vs treated microbial culture. Is it correct to calculate increase or decrease in band area viz difference in samples (C vs T).

That's a very interesting question. Thanks. According to the famous FTIR analysis, the fingerprint of the material is investigated and any change in it means a difference in the chemical structure of the two materials under investigation.
Sometimes we may ask the question: what the hell does this complete mess mean?
For example, we know that the OH bond appears in a narrow range from 3230 to 3550 cm-1 if it is in conjunction with an alcoholic chemical like propanol. In contrast, if the same OH is in conjunction with an organic acid such as ethanolic acid, it is characterized in a wide range from 2500 to 3300 cm-1 (relatively wide band) in FTIR analysis.
That's why it needs to be checked very cautiously and carefully. Other analyses such as chemical analyses like ICP-Ms or ICP-OES or NMR, etc. can help to analyze and interpret more accurately.
