I have NCEP data for past and GCM dataset for future in daily temporal resolution.I need to convert daily dataset to hourly data. The attached paper suggests a method but I am not sure whether it is full-proof and applicable.
I think it is difficult to downscale daily data to hourly data in a real time. maybe it is acceptable to do it in some errors.but it is a statistical result.
The utility industry makes measurements on timescales of 15 minutes for purposes of forecasting load levels in wind farms. This data, however, is generally not public ally available.
However, hourly data for scientific purposes is mostly not useful, its completely dominated by strong fluctuations across the wind array. Indeed, at many wind farms there can be an hour (often midday) in which the wind is not blowing at all
but then picks up in a couple of hours. The fluctuations are extremely large. Indeed reliable average wind speeds usually require a 3-5 day averaging window because that is the natural timescale associated with most weather systems.
