ECMWF reanalyses data sets may be what you are looking for, they are available here: http://apps.ecmwf.int/datasets/

ERA40 Interim is around 0.75 degree resolution, but only begins in 1979, ERA40 is around 1.1 degree resolution and began in 1957.

thanks for the response.I got to know about CFSR dataset which is 0.5 degree.Will be intresting to check the performance of above datasets.
