I need to prepare a mixture of two solvents where one of them is chloroform and the other must have the characteristics of having a pH between 4 and 10. Does anyone have any suggestions, please?
If the pH, that is required, is below 7 up to 4... then my simple suggestion is to add (acetic acid + water) to chloroform. Water is added is to ensure dissociation that gives H+ that can be measured as pH.
If the desired pH is above 7 up to 10... then my suggestion is to add (triethylamine + water) to chloroform. This amine has significant basicity.
In both cases drop-wise addition is accompanied by measurement of pH every now & then.
You need to add a buffer solution either acidic and or basic in different runs. former is a mixture of a weak acid and it's salt like acetic acid and it's salt like sodium acetate while the latter is a mixture of weak base like ammonium hydroxide and it's salt ammonium chloride.
